We have a special place in our hearts for Sherri Williams: the owner of a sex toy store called Love Stuff in Hoover, Alabama, she has been fighting her state’s ban on sex toys since the law was enacted in 1998. Yep, you read right, 1998: this isn’t an antiquated law Williams is trying to scrape off the books, it’s a shiny new law to keep all good vibrations out of Alabama. Sadly, her 11-year legal battle just hit a dead-end in the state’s Supreme Court: They voted 7-2 to reject a challenge to the state law that bans the sale of sex toys except for limited purposes.

It’s ridiculous. The stores have to make you sign a form similar to a release form stating that the product, i.e. vibrator or toy, will only be used for novelty, medical, scientific, or educational purposes—which, in many cases is what it’s being used for anyway. I personally think sexual health is quite important, as is experimentation with orgasms and educating one’s partner as how to please one self is also of upmost importance. It’s all just one big charade.

One more reason I won’t be moving to Alabama any time soon! I’ll keep my money and my sex toys in Florida. They’re probably afraid if women buy sex toys, they won’t get all the cooking and cleaning done.

I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT. Ewwwwww!!

That said, Alabama needs to wise up! I have SUCH a hard time understanding how sex toys are obscene and immoral, if they are sold with discretion and dignity!

I HATE the new lay out too, please go back and do not try to fix what aint’ broken!

That said, some parts of the country are still in the middle ages. In fact, I think their governments are the ones in the middle ages.
Had this issue be submitted to popular vote, no chance this agents of antidemocracy would be able to ennact such stupid laws.
Hugo Chavez ( the venezuelan dictator ) has people in the US that can very well work in his favor.

Re: the new site layout: In the next few days, we are planning on adding a link at the bottom of “The Latest” section that would say something like “view all latest posts” and would take you to a page that is pretty a version of the old homepage, i.e. all recent posts in chronological order with the first paragraph or two of each post on the page. Meaning, if that’s the way you prefer to view our site, you can just bookmark that page and use that as your homepage from that point on. Hope this will improve your browsing experience!

The “comments” section on the site seems a little off. Spacing between topic and comment is sometimes nonexistent. Probably just my machine–I have some atypical graphics–but check it out anyway please.

Good luck with the site. My girlfriend fights tooth and nail to avoid any new software and then one day wakes up and declares she doesn’t know how she lived without it.

Odd that you didn’t set up an entry about how and why the new site, if just to give credit to its designers.

  7. Elizabeth Says:

    I like the new site… But apparently I’m alone… :(

However, I hope the Supreme Court agrees to hear this case and rules is WRONG. Because it’s ridiculous. What I put in, on or around my genitals is no one’s business but mine and my partner’s.

  8. Elizabeth Says:

*note: That should have said ruled IT wrong. Not is.

  9. Miss Jackson Says:

At least there is the valiant champion, Rep. John Rogers to fight for sex toys in this grand state.

But seriously, check out the endearingly crazy Loretta Nall’s commentary on sex toys in the state. Her actions (like mailing an inflatable lovable pig to the attorney general during her “toys for Troy” campaign) have inspired some of the best political cartoons I have every seen.

  10. Michael K Says:

Wow being a guy I was once afraid of living up to sex toys until i started using them in my interaction with females and since my sex life has had a tremendous boost both for me and my female partners…. alabama needs to get a clue!!

  11. Em & Lo Says:

Alan, we’re working on the comments thing (we think it’s a browser compatibility issue), thanks for the heads up. And a post about our redesign is forthcoming; we just wanted to tweak a few final things first. James and Amanda (and anyone else who wants to read the site the old way): Just click on “The Latest” in the top nav bar, or bookmark this page: http://www.emandlo.com/latest/

  12. Madamoiselle L Says:

    As per the article:

Hence the upswing in sales in hairbrushes with long, thick handles, “ultra sonic” rechargeable toothbrushes, Coca Cola in those cute little green 8 oz glass bottles (cheaper than a “hand blown” glass dil) and everything from vibrating facial “massages” to mascara that vibrates.

From the Reddest State of all. What DO they hope to accomplish?
