The Virginity Project – a Blog, a Book, a Play

Pop Culture

We first heard from Kate Monro a few years ago from across the pond when her¬†Virginity Project was just a fledgeling little baby blog. Today,¬†that blog, which collects and publishes first time tales of all sorts from all over the world, is¬†shortlisted for the final of the¬†UK Cosmoplitan Blog Awards 2011; she’s got a book out this year based on the blog called¬†“First Times: True Tales of Virginity Lost and Found”; and this month her blog/book is being turned into a play at the¬†Tristan Bates Theatre in Covent Garden, London.

And here’s the really cool thing about “The Virginity Project” play: no need to hop a jet to England to attend. The show is being¬†streamed live from the Camden Theatres website during each run (Thur, Fri and Sat nights at 7:15pm UK time/2:15pm Eastern time for the next two weeks [Oct 13-22], with Sat matinees as well at 3pmUK/10amUS). And they’re aiming to make it a truly interactive experience: as a member of the internet audience, you will be taken ‘backstage’ during the show to learn more about the background to each of the characters in Monro’s book; and in between the actors’ monologues, you’ll also be invited to Tweet in your own stories, thoughts & reactions and this material will then be fed back into the show by the narrator. You could say you’ve starred in a London play! At the very least, you can squirm as you watch audience members in the actual theater volunteer to go up on stage, sit in the Virginity Chair and explain on the spot how they cashed in their V-cards — the play started running last week and people actually did this every night!

The streaming fee is ¬£2.99 ($4.61 approx), about a quarter of the price of a theater seat. If ¬†you want to download it and watch at a later date, you’ll be able to do that in the last week of the run (from Oct 20-22). And if you want to give Kate a hand, you can¬†vote for her blog to win that Cosmo award here.

  1. Chris Mellor Says:

I only hope that American audiences will consider watching the live streamed shows at 2.15 pm your time, and sending your tweeted comments to #camdentheatres , it would be good to get some feedback and some virginity loss stories from this side of the pond.
You too can be in the West Endn!.
