Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. Got a dream you want Lauri to analyze? Click here to submit it (18 and older only, please). This week, a reader tells Lauri:

In my dream, my boyfriend and I were standing in a dark forest and I were hearing creepy sounds. Then I woke up.

Lauri:  Even just a snippet of a dream such as this can hold meaning for you, so let’s see if we can figure it out.

The setting is a dark forest. Typically the setting of a dream will reflect “where you are” in your life or “where you are” in a particular situation. Darkness in a dream is often connected to “being in the dark” in real life, being uncertain about things and having to deal with some unknowns. That’s also what forests often symbolize: mystery, the unknown. Are you and your boyfriend in a place in your relationship where there is a lot of uncertainty? Or are you the one that is feeling uncertain? What are you “in the dark about” lately?

The creepy sounds suggest you have a bad feeling about something and may even point to the whispers or buzz going on about your relationship. Is there anyone around you who doesn’t like the two of you together or who is saying negative things about you? The dream is showing you the state of your relationship. It seems you feel you need light shed upon the uncertainty you are dealing with and perhaps that is what will put an end to either the talk that may be swirling around you or the ominous feelings you may be having.

I had a dream that I was spending time with a young male child in a room. From the other side of a door, I could hear my best female friend talking to another child. The weird thing is: she had the same dream from her point of view. We tried a relationship a while back, but there were some issues. I live in Ohio, and she lives 500 miles away in Illinois. We’re not sure what it means. We assume the children in the dream are our own.

Lauri:  We’ve been getting an onslaught of people writing to Em & Lo claiming they had the same dream as someone else. It’s called Shared Dreaming and it happens more often than you might think. The reason why it happens is because the two people who experienced the same dream are often both involved in the same issue and therefore dream about the issue in a similar manner.

The issue you share with your friend is a romantic relationship that didn’t work out. The door in your dreams probably symbolizes that you two have closed the door on that aspect of the relationship and are now just friends. But it could also symbolize what came between the two of you, besides the distance. Were either of you not open enough?

The children in the dream, rather than being your own children, are more likely the childish part of yourselves. Did the relationship end due to childish behavior?

Our dreams help us to figure out our issues and it seems that, through your shared dream, the two of you have figured out why the romantic part of your relationship didn’t work out… and sometimes people are simply better together as friends.

“The Nightmare” by John Henry Fuseli

Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. Got a dream you want Lauri to analyze? Click here to submit it (18 and older only, please). This week, a reader tells Lauri:

My boyfriend and me had a dream about demons! His was he was killing demons and mine was helping my cousin while she was possesed by one. Two cats appeared in my dream, and bit my cousins neck.

Lauri:  It’s actually pretty common for two people, who are close, to have the same dream or very similar dreams on the same night. If you scroll through this column, you’ll see I have answered questions about this before. In a nutshell, the reason why this happens is because the two individuals who have the same or similar dream on the same night are likely dealing with the same issue and their subconscious minds respond to the issue in a similar fashion resulting in a similar dream experience. Pretty cool, huh?

So, these demon dreams are most likely connected to the same issue. Demons in dreams tend to symbolize a negative force in your life, a bad situation or behavior or something that you have “demonized.” Your boyfriend was killing the demon in his dream, which suggests that, in real life, he is actively working on putting an end to this negative situation or behavior. Your dream demon possessed your cousin, which tells us you view this negative element in your life as all consuming to the point that you may not be yourself lately… that is, unless your cousin is actively involved in your relationship or actively opinionated about it then you may feel SHE is not being herself lately.

The cats in your dream may point to catty behavior. So again, is your cousin giving you a hard time about your relationship? Whatever the case, these dreams indicate you and your boyfriend are both aware that a negative force looming about and it is time to put up a united front!

I dreamed me and my wife had a threesome with a guy. This dream occurs to me frequently, what does this signify? What does this symbolize? Is it a bad omen or what? Thank you!

Lauri:  There are two main reasons we get recurring dreams:

1. The dream is connected to an ongoing issue that has yet to be resolved; for as long as the issue continues, so will the dream.

2. The dream is connected to a recurring behavior pattern of yours in real life; whenever you exhibit the behavior you get the dream.

So let’s see if we can figure out which it is. The guy in the dream symbolizes something that has been brought into the marriage. Can you pinpoint when these dreams began? If so, then the issue the guy symbolizes began around the same time. I’m assuming the guy in the dream is someone that doesn’t actually exist in real life, in which case he will symbolize male assertive energy. Has your wife been a bit more “ballsy” lately (in the bedroom or elsewhere): speaking her mind, standing up for herself, making things happen, making more money, working more, etc? If so, then that may be what this guy is.

Or are you the one being more ballsy, assertive, etc.? Or is there some issue or activity that you both have become “involved” in? You should be able to connect it to one of the three.

Once you do, it’s time to decide if this is a welcome addition to the marriage or is it something that you feel is getting in between the two of you. I hope this gives you enough ammo to figure it out. Once you decide this is a welcome addition to the marriage or decide it is not and remove it, the dreams will stop.

My fiancé dreamed that he stabbed me in front of our kids. What does this mean?

Lauri:  Provided your fiancé does not have a violent background, don’t let this dream worry you. In fact, I think there are two good signs here:

1. The fact that he told you this dream shows that he is honest is with you.

2. The content of this dream shows he has a great deal of concern for you and for the kids.

You see, typically, stabbing in a dream can be connected to verbal anger in real life. Around the time of this dream, do you recall the two of you having an argument, and in particular, do you recall him criticizing you or saying emotionally wounding words to you? We often use the term “cutting remarks” when referring to harsh and painful words. That suggests that he is aware of any emotional pain he may have caused you and since the dream took place in front of your children, he is aware that your arguments may have an impact on them. I also believe it shows a bit of guilt on his part.

So thank him for sharing the dream with you. And I would also recommend that you two make a habit of sharing your dreams with each other every morning. My hubby and I do this over coffee. It’s a great way to start the day because you’ll laugh at the absurdity dreams often provide, and you’ll stay plugged in to each other.

Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. Got a dream you want Lauri to analyze? Click here to submit it (18 and older only, please). This week, a reader asks Lauri:

My husband spends a lot of time doing extracurricular activities that he and I used to do together, but now I’m working 12 hour shifts 5 days a week. Recently I’ve started having dreams of him being unfaithful and having oral sex with someone else, where he’s the giver. He tries to kiss me but I can smell it. We’re with a group of people and everyone starts to laugh at me. What does this mean?

Lauri:  If you’ve been reading my column here on EMandLO.com, you are probably aware that the cheating dreams you are getting are caused by your feelings of being “cheated” out of all the fun you and hubby used to have. Rather than the activities being something the two of you share, they now feel like a third wheel. Although, understandably, you must be wondering about the oral sex aspect of the dream.

Typically, anything oral in a dream can be connected to communication. Does he tell you all about the fun he had on those days he goes out and you have to work? If so, THAT is what is causing the jealousy and THAT is why he is the giver of oral in the dream. His trying to kiss you is also about communication. When he sees that you are getting upset about the fun he is telling you about, does he try to sweeten you up and make you not feel so bad? That’s not unlike a verbal kiss… and might even feel like “he’s rubbing your face in it,” so to speak. But you still smell the remnants of the oral in the dream because you can’t let the jealousy go. And I don’t blame you… it stinks! (Get it?)

You must feel like he isn’t being sensitive to the fact that you are feeling left out of all the fun. He probably feels like there is no reason he shouldn’t still be able to do these activities. Relationships require compromise. You aren’t in it for yourself; you’re in it for each other. As long as he keeps up all this fun without you, your dreams are going to continue, because the jealousy and animosity will continue. Hopefully a compromise can be reached. My advice… don’t nag. Don’t be accusatory. Sweeten the pot. Be creative. Good luck!

I’ve been having the same recurring dream for a while about masturbating myself. Keep in mind I’m only 18, I have no intentions at all to masturbate, unless for my future husband’s pleasure, I’m not dating anyone, and on top of that all I’m a Christian. In the dreams I’m finding weird objects around my house that are straight and long, such as perfume bottles, bathroom items, and anything that resembles that part. My last dream was me not really masturbating, but weirdly taking pots out of my private part in my mom’s bathroom.

Lauri:  There may be a physiological as well as a psychological reason you are getting these dreams. Physiologically, the body needs sexual release. If that release is not provided while awake, the brain will instruct the body to release while in REM, resulting in sexual dream content. It is a healthy and natural thing, so don’t let it upset you. It’s perfectly normal.

Now let’s talk about the psychology behind these dreams! Masturbation dreams can also be the result of being pleased with oneself in waking life, hence the act of “self pleasure” in the dream. Have you accomplished anything lately or received accolades from others? If so, this is one reason why you have these dreams.

Now let’s talk about those pots. Rather than inserting them, you are removing them from down below… the opposite of masturbation. I think that dream reflects your aversion to sexual acts of any kind until marriage. Pots are used to heat things up, get thinks cooking, which is kind of what sexual activity does to our nether regions. You are removing the pots because your convictions dictate that there should be no heat in your little lady. I believe that dream is just trying to help you stick to your decision, so again, worry not.

Finally, remember that sexual content in a dream doesn’t mean you are cheating on your convictions! Rather, it is your mind and body working together to keep you on that path.

I dreamed that I cut my own penis off, but then I put it back on like nothing ever happened.

Lauri:  You’d be surprised how many men tell me some version of the detachable penis dream! So rest assured, you are in good company.

Dismemberment dreams are often connected to some sort of separation in real life. You did the dismembering in the dream, so is there any person or situation in your waking life that you have cut yourself off from?

If not, then the dream may be more about what male genitalia often represents. It’s really more about what we attribute to the male persona than it is about your actual junk, so don’t worry! Male genitalia in a dream is often about one’s ability to be assertive, to man up and take care of business, so to speak. At the time of this dream, was there anything going on where you did not want to utilize this part of yourself? Were you afraid to be “stand up” and be assertive about something? Or were you in a situation where you felt it best to be more sensitive and understanding?

I think it’s a good sign that you were able to put it back on like nothing ever happened. That tells me you either reconnected with someone and let bygones be bygones, or you’ve learned the fine art of balance, of being firm when you need to, and caring when you want. In either case, I think you deserve a pat on the back.

I dreamed that my deceased husband came back and all he wanted was sex. At the same time I said, “Don’t you see me, I’m losing all my teeth.” Then he got mad at me and said, “No, we better not, you might get sick.”

Lauri:  I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. I can see how this dream would have you scratching your head. It is more likely that this dream is trying to help you with life after him, rather than it being him coming through to you in the dream.

I don’t know how long it’s been since he passed, so I am going to assume it’s recent enough that you are still adjusting. His desire to have sex is really your desire. Remember, this dream is a creation of your own mind, so everything in it is of you.

It’s very interesting that you turn him down due to concern over losing your teeth. While that would surely kill the mood in real life, I think it is actually more symbolic of something you feel you are losing. In my research I have found that when we lose teeth in a dream, it is because we have allowed something out of our mouth that should have stayed in there permanently, we said something without thinking about it first. Is there anything you wish you had never said to your husband before he passed? Or is there something you wish you had said?

Losing teeth can also be connected to feelings of being inadequate. Have you been feeling less of a person since your husband passed? He then proceeds to get angry with you. Remember, this is really YOUR anger. Are you in the anger phase of grief? Or are you angry at yourself about something?

Whatever it is, you are told in the dream that you might get sick. Pay attention to whatever you are told in a dream because it is coming from your wise, subconscious, intuitive self. Have you been making yourself sick with grief, regret, anger or anything similar? Your dream states you might get sick, so it’s not an issue yet, but perhaps getting close. So take care of yourself, forgive yourself, and love yourself. It’s going to be okay.

Dreamer’s Response: Thank you so much. I’m pretty sure you hit this right on the nail. I lost my husband 18 months ago. I have always felt that I didn’t tell him enough how much I loved him. And that I had guilt that I didn’t care for him long enough. Because he died so quickly. And yes I do feel inadequate. I miss him so much. He is all had. … again, thank you.

I had a dream that I was marrying a complete stranger. In my dream I was preparing to walk down the aisle but I forgot my shoes. As I was putting on my shoes I looked up to see the groom and realized I didn’t know who he was. As I walked to him I noticed my legs getting weak, I had to get help from one of my aunts to walk down the aisle. When I got closer to the groom my father, who has been dead for 7yrs, was there to give me away. There wasn’t a ceremony, my mom just had us sign some paperwork and then we were married. I felt nothing for this man. We didn’t even kiss. The whole time all I could think about was one of my close guys friends and wishing he was here. I’ll admit I’ve always loved him but we were only friends. After the reception I keep wondering if my friend was mad at me for getting married. So I decided on my wedding day I didn’t want to be married to my husband anymore.

Lauri: You have had the classic “mystery groom” dream that so many women before you have had and so many women after you will have. It is such a common dream because we, of the fairer sex, often struggle with utilizing our balls, to put it lightly. That’s what the unknown groom is in your dream… your metaphoric ballsy self. He is unfamiliar to you because you may not feel comfortable utilizing this side of yourself or you may not even recognize this part of you. But in the dream you are about to be united with it in marital bliss! What this means is that, at the time of this dream, you were considering making a commitment to this side of yourself.

You have a couple other symbols in here that point to a need to be more assertive.
Your lack of shoes = not feeling sure footed or not feeling comfortable “putting your foot down” and your weak legs = not feeling strong enough to stand up for yourself or not feeling strong enough to move forward with a decision.

I can’t help but have this sinking suspicion that your struggle to man up is connected to your feelings for your friend. Have you been thinking about telling him your true feelings? That would certainly take some balls. I understand your hesitation. At the end of your dream you made a decision that you did not want to be married anymore, which likely means in real life you decided not to pursue a romantic relationship with your friend. You may have chosen the best course of action. I can’t say for sure though. Maybe people can give you their thoughts in the comments. But just remember, if you have decided not to pursue a relationship with this friend, don’t allow your feelings for him to crowd out any other romantic possibilities for you.
