Confession: The Top 10 Reasons I Love My IUD

Our contributor Abby Spector, who is majoring in Feminine/Gender/Sexuality Studies at Wesleyan University, confesses her love for her IUD:

  1. No hormones!
  2. But if you like hormones, they offer one with hormones.
  3. I don’t need to remember take a pill, change a patch, get another shot, or visit the doctor.
  4. Where will you be in 12-years? That’s how long the IUD can last. (No worries. You can get it removed any time).
  5. I love Norway. Norwegians love the IUD, with 27% of their safe, sexually active women using an IUD.
  6. IUDs are 99% effective. Woo!
  7. The T-shape makes me think of a mini-cross lodged in my uterus. It’s like Jesus warding off sperm.
  8. In the process of insertion, I learned that I have a tilted uterus. I feel unique, like there’s a mini slide in my va-jay.
  9. My mom has one. I trust that lady and I love her uterus.
  10. My bank account. It’s one of the most — if not THE most — inexpensive form of birth control: $500 to $1000 for up to 12 years. That’s less than 7 bucks a month, or less than 23 cents a day!

For more information, go to PlannedParenthood.com or talk to your gynecologist (and yes, you should have one).

  1. Love mine! Had a lot of pain at first ( take ibuprofen before insert). And for about 1 month. Went back to doctor, who trimmed wires a bit and no problem since. Also no period-yay!!!!

  2. My husband can feel it at times (not just the strings, the tip as well), but only in certain positions. He’s just learned not to thrust so deep in those particular positions. No problem. Otherwise, it’s the most wonderful little invention ever!

“…Jesus warding off sperm.” That is so awesome! It’s like the Mormon holy undies for the cervix.

  3. I think of mine kind of like a bug zapper but for sperm.

Guys can’t feel it and if they do it’s just the string hanging down which your doc can trim to make it shorter.

    Best purchase hands down.

  4. We thought the same thing when my husband felt something “poke” him right after I got mine. But it actually turns out that in the few weeks after the IUD is inserted, it can cause temporary hard cysts that can be painful for the guy during sex. They went away though and I’ve had my IUD for 4 years. I love it.

  5. I loved my 99% effective copper IUD for all the reasons you listed above (except the Jesus part) UNTIL I GOT KNOCKED UP. Ya 99% isn’t 100% and it sucks ass!

  6. I was debating whether or not to get an IUD, and after doing some research I found that sometimes men, during sex, can feel the tip of the wire poke into their penis. Is this an issue anyone else with an IUD is having or is this a myth?

  7. you can still use a menstrual cup with an IUD. I have mirena and my dr. said it’s absolutely safe 🙂

  8. I LOVE my copper IUD! Sure, sometimes the cramping makes me want to die, but hormonal birth control makes me fat and crazy, so this is a better option for me. Nobody wants to have sex with a mad cow anyway.

  9. I just got one too! I had some pains to begin with but now I can’t feel anything.
Cor… what a relief! Definitely worth a try I’d say ladies! xxx
