Dream Interpretation: I Chopped Off My Willy in the Tub

Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. Got a dream you want Lauri to analyze? Click here to submit it) This week, a reader asks Lauri:

Well I just had a very disturbing dream about deciding to cut of my willy in the bath, and I feel it has nothing to do with preconceptions of how men and women behave.

In my dream, I don’t know why, I decided to cut it off with a knife, thinking I’d just reattach it, but then it got cut into like three bits somehow and there were all these fibers and blobby bits of flesh you can’t just stick back on. And it was almost in the dark, so I had to get up and switch the light on –getting up out of the bath and holding two knives and three bits of penis, making matters worse.

It was an absolute nightmare, but I don’t feel it had anything to do with societal pressures about “manning up.” If anything, more general than the simple terrifying possibility of absentmindedly cutting off my dick, maybe it had something to do with making regrettable irreversible changes. I don’t know — maybe you do?

By the way, this all took place in a rather quaint Bavarian apartment overlooking a town with gothic architecture!

Lauri:  Okay then, if you’re certain there is no situation in your life right now where you have become  — or need to become — less assertive and “manly”, then let’s see what else this dream could possibly mean. Since you are in the bath in this dream, then it is most likely connected to some waking issue where you are trying to cleanse yourself of something or someone that is negative, something or someone that is dirtying up your normally peaceful and clean state of mind.

You decide to cut off your willy, thinking you could reattach it. Dismemberment in a dream usually means the dreamer has severed ties with someone in the waking world. At the time of this dream, do you recall cutting someone out of your life in order to clean up your life? Perhaps someone you might describe as “a dick?”

Whatever the case, all the fibers and blobby bits suggest that what should have been a clean break has turned into a bit of a mess… or that you fear cutting ties could make a bad situation worse. And struggling to turn the light on may also be connected to your fear that when light is shed upon this situation, when the truth comes out, it will reveal to others the messy situation you now have on your hands.

If this seems to fit some area of your life, then what you can take from this dream is this: While a clean break may not be possible, it’s time to decide if it’s worth the mess in the long run.

Dreamer’s response: Thanks for interpreting my dream. I split up with a long-term girlfriend I really loved and still do, but our situation together became unbearable. We were fighting all the time, literally not sleeping because of endless rows. A couple of months after breaking up, we started seeing eachother again and since have been in a murky situation. We both know how we feel for one another, but I can’t get back with her. I know I can’t repair things and go back to our once happy past, but I also can’t stop desiring her.

I never would have made the connection between my dream and my relationship with her, but it makes total sense really. She was the last person I spoke to before going to bed, and when I woke up from that nightmare, I felt the need to send her a message telling her about it.

Cheers for helping me make sense of that! Dunno if it’ll help me resolve this situation, probably not, but at least I know it’s ravaging the depths of my soul! Hah…
