WTF: Potbellies on Dudes Are Now Officially Hot

beer_gutphoto by Vee Dub

Oh, it’s so unfair! We women are held to ridiculous American Apparel size-0 standards (yes, mostly self-imposed, but the media practically makes us do it!), while men get to eat what they want, become chubby, and are still considered cute and even sexy (e.g. Seth Rogen, Zach Galifianakis, Tobey Maguire). To make matters worse, the NYTimes Styles section on Wednesday embraced potbellies on guys in Williamsburg as a hot, new trend — an ironic reaction to metrosexuality and “manscaping.” In other words, beer guts — but only on guys — are now stylish. (Salon’s Broadsheet does a nice job of poo-poo-ing this particular piece of doo-doo.)

  1. I like them. I can’t be completely alone on that. I love the one in the picture, but I usually prefer smaller ones. Just a little bump is soo cute!

  2. It depends on who you fall in love with. I don’t find beer guts on men particularly PHYSICALLY attractive, but if the guy is kind, a good provider and good in bed, I don’t see a problem with with it. Especially, if it happens as he gets older, and you are already together.

My man weighs what he did in High School, 6 ft 2, and about 175 to 185 lbs, I got one of those guys who has a metabolism like a 16 year old boy, and he never gains weight. BUT, if he were to get a little chubby, it wouldn’t bother me, as long as he still took care of himself and remained healthy.

To me a little pot belly isn’t an enormous turn off, but not what I would call “hot” either.

  3. Patrick, I’m sure it’s your modesty that gets the ladies going, in addition to your little tummy 🙂 Kidding aside, I agree, we’re not all meant to have 10% body fat…

  4. Okay, let’s face it, it all depends on what you like. I have a nice sized little beer-gut that many women and gay guys find sexy. But, that’s because I’m very good-looking, 6’1″ tall, and built like a football player (I’m not a blimp). My lady finds my belly warm and cuddly and uses it as a pillow. Yeah! So, gals,if you really like skinny guys–great, but some of us just aren’t built that way. There’s something for everybody.

  5. I’m a guy with a Rogen-esque body shape.
in my experience.. women do NOT find that hot.
whoever thinks it’s true is just indulging in wishful thinking

also.. side note… a little bit of weight on a girl is not a bad thing.

  6. I agree with everyone thus far, pot bellies, beer guts, etc on men is totally unattractive. It could be a 5 second fad, who knows, or maybe just some article written by a fat dude who cannot get girls and is trying to make ‘chubby’ sexy. Sorry didn’t work. Abs all the way on men, that is total hotness!!!

  7. Belly fat in men lowers their testosterone levels. This affects their sex drive and endurance in bed. If you get a really big beer belly, it can reduce the effective size of the man’s endowment. This is not hot.

  8. There’s a difference between chubbiness/bulk to fat/pot-belly/’misproportioned weight.’ Whoever declared it as hot clearly has a potbelly himself, because Conrad is right. It just doesn’t look healthy, and it’s not sexy.

  9. Seth Rogen lost most of his weight. I don’t think he’s the best example. Also, beer bellies are not attractive, on anyone. Misproportioned weight is not sexy.
