Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. This week, a reader asks Lauri:
I dreamed that I accidentally cut off my penis. It eventually was easily attached back in place, but after great quandary.
Lauri: Worry not, my friend. Dream-induced castration is more common than you might think! You see, dreaming about specific body parts is rarely about that particular organ or appendage, but rather about an emotional or mental ability that particular part represents.
No matter your gender in waking life, a penis is your ability to “man up,” be assertive and stand up (ahem) for yourself; it represents all the qualities typically associated with male energy. Alternatively, a vagina is your ability to be sensitive, a good listener, a nurturer, or your ability to “give birth” to new creative ideas and projects, it represents all the qualities typically associated with female energy.
That being said, accidentally severing your little man down there suggests you may have inadvertently exhibited some sort of passive or gentle behavior in waking life. Think back to what was going on in your life at the time of this dream. Did you not stand up for yourself when you really should have? Did you turn the other cheek when someone challenged you? Or did you cry during a chick flick? You must have done something that made you worry your man card might be revoked!
Your dreaming mind is assuring you that all is well, because you were able to reattach the joy stick. Whew! That’s a good indication you have redeemed yourself to the boys’ club. But do keep in mind that, as much as it may freak you out, detachable genital dreams can actually be a good sign! They suggest that you have the ability to pick and choose which gender role would suit you at any given time. We all need to be able to be sensitive and nurturing without being overly emotional, and firm and determined without being too aggressive.
