My dad used to stimulate my interest in research by telling me a really obscure dirty word, then seeing if I could find out the meaning. This was WAY before Google – research meant a trip to the library and poring through voluminous tomes.
Anyway, I had a teacher named Mr. Merkin. After I graduated from middle school my dad told me that Mr. Merkin’s name had a hilarious meaning, which I quickly learned. I couldn’t believe such a thing existed, and couldn’t for the life of me figure out why someone would wear one. Now I know.
