Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. Each week, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg tells one lucky reader what their dirty dream means. Got a dream you want Lauri to analyze? Click here to submit it) This week, a reader asks Lauri:
I have realized that I have a been having a particularly odd recurring dream for many years. In the dream, I realize that my erect penis has come off. My emotion at the time varies from mild concern, to thinking that this is somewhat normal, but there is never any pain or horror. The recurring part is that it magically reattaches, and sometimes I’m surprised by how easily it goes back on.
In last night’s version, I was in a busy place and I was trying to find a bathroom stall, but there were lines for all the stalls. I was searching for an empty stall, and the walls were really low so you could see the people inside. I got to an area where there were two women sitting on the stalls writing or doing homework, and not actually going to the bathroom. I asked one of the women to give up the stall so that people could use it, and she refused. I somewhat aggressively picked up her purse and put it outside the stall, so she was forced to leave. Once inside the stall, I set out to put my unattached penis back on. I turned my back to the people outside, because I didn’t want anyone to see what I was doing.
I think I had a few more “reattachments” after that, and finally, there was one point where I waited too long to reattach it, and the “connection” started to dry up, at which point I had to go to the hospital.
I’ve seen other interpretations for other castration and penis dreams, but not one that centers around how the penis easily reattaches!
Lauri: The reattachable penis dream is more common than you may think. The meaning of it varies, depending on the context of the dream. In your case, I think it is connected to your ability to “stand up” for yourself or for what is right and “not bend” to others demands, due to the fact that your penis is erect in your dreams. Would you say that you are pretty laid back and easy going for the most part, but can be “firm” and assertive when you need to be… kind of like turning on a switch or plugging in a part?
Your latest dream gives us more clues. The bathroom suggests you had a need — at the time of this dream — to “relieve yourself” of some sort of frustration or negativity, but it would probably require you to “stand up” and be “firm” in order to do so. But what is most interesting to me about this dream is the waiting: you wait in line for a “stall” (have you or has someone around you been stalling on something) and then you find that you almost waited too long. So what in your real life seems similar to this? I think the message of the dream is, when an issue “arises”, ahem, stand your ground right away, otherwise the situation may be irrevocable.

MORE FROM EMandLO.com:
I just woke up from this same dream and realized I’ve had it before. It actually took me a minute to realize it WAS a dream and that I didn’t have to face the dilemma of reattaching it. And then I thought “that’s crazy, nobody’s dick falls off!” Then I wondered if anyone else has this dream, I’m glad I’m not alone.
I resonate with the meaning mentioned about standing up for yourself, but unlike some of the other people’s examples, I was actually pretty disturbed it came off and doubtful it would stay on once held in place. This is weird guys. Why do our brains do this to us?
It’s kind of funny looking for an answer to this because as a male having the dream, it’s easy to tell how unsatisfactory the answers we’ve been able to find are.
Nothing else in these dreams matter lol. The only thing we are focused on is the fact our dick fell off and reattaches itself. Me I just have to like hold it where it goes and it like reattaches itself.
It’s not emasculation or loss of power. I have antisocial personality disorder and I wear a mask so the hidden nature answer poses some promise but it has nothing to do with it being reattachable. I have lots of sex and it’s easy for me to find partners.
It’s not about power. It’s not about gender and it’s not even about sex. Just for whatever random reason my penis is no longer attached to me and if I hold it where it’s supposed to go, it reattaches itself. At this point in my dream I’ve learned it’ll reattach itself so I don’t react to it not being on anymore but there is slight worry it won’t reattach again but it always does.
what if it’s a woman having sex with her boyfriend in the dream and she dreams that the penis detached inside her and she couldn’t get it out? Also busy place went to the bathroom got inn the tub underwater to see if it would help get it out and others start to come in the bathroom so she leaves while in the tub she did get a bit of it out but was concerned about destroying the penis as if once out she can give it back to the boyfriend….what’s that all about?
I, too, have had this recurring dream which is why I’m here. My penis would come off near the body and leave a stub that would reaccept the penis once I held it back on for a moment. I see the truth in the interpretation above and I also wonder if the dream could mean a kind of symbolic allegory that sex is no longer important to me and maybe it’s a dream manifestation of seeing the futility of the sexual pursuits that once, like most men, used to preoccupy my mind? I can now take it or leave it and it won’t affect who I am inside. Like I read, there is shocking apathy that my penis is severed from my body in these dreams and a placid assurance that as soon as I place it back on the nub, it will be soon ready for use again. Maybe this is just a middle-aged man’s dream of maturity, acceptance and moving on.
Thank you… My entire personality used to be about sex and pursuing women and now I am completely apathetic towards this pursuit. Thank you for this interpretation, I’ve been searching for the right one for awhile now.
I’ve had similar re-occurring dreams as well – I got a huge laugh when I read the OP part about having mild concern because this seemed “normal” or happened all the time. I also shared the part about waiting too long and needing assistance to reattach. While most of my dreams about this are not horrifying, as was stated, I have had times where I was seriously concerned because I had lost it for such a long time. The other funny thing is it is also erect all the time.
I attribute it to having heard a song in my teenage years “detachable penis” by: cannot remember the NAME ATM. It seems to coincide with the time I started having the dream.
Hm.. I agree with the answer given but like Tim said what about the de/reattaching part.. What’s that mean
This is the dumbest possible reply. You didn’t answer the question, WHY IS THE PENIS DETACHABLE. You sound really unprofessional.
