I Dreamt I Was in Bed with My Dead Husband

Other people’s dreams are never interesting…except when they’re about sex. If you’ve got a good one, our dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg just might tell you what it means! Click here to submit yours (18 and older only for dream interpretations, please). This week, a reader asks Lauri:

I dreamt that my dead husband was in my bed with his back to me, all I could see was his moles, he never spoke, he died from cancer that had spread throughout his whole body last June. I tried to look around, I wasn’t at home but in a hotel with two double beds. We slept apart for the last two years because of pain and other things, I looked at the spare bed and couldn’t work out why I was in bed with him, for a moment I forgot he was gone! I then woke up in the sitting position crying, it took time to realize I was back at home, then he was gone. We were also with other family members staying in another room.

LauriI’m so sorry for the loss of your husband. You are still deep in grief and this dream reflects that.

His back being to you in the dream reflects the part of your grief where you feel left behind, that in leaving this earth he has turned his back on you. His moles likely represent the cancer and you only see them in the dream because, towards the end, it was probably hard to see your hubby through the cancer that had ravaged his body.

It is interesting that you were in bed with him even though in reality you slept apart for the last two years. This could be a reflection of your desire to have things back to the way they used to be before sleeping apart was required… but it could also be that a part of you knows that he is still with you even though you are not physically together.

All of this takes place in a hotel as a reminder that the is deep grief is a temporary place to be, just as a hotel is a temporary place to stay. Of course the grief never goes away but there will be a time where you can actually feel like you are living and functioning again, and I think your dream is reminding you of that so hang in there!

  1. Wow, I so totally hear that, I lost my husband 14 yrs ago. Please don’t read too much into the dream, I’ve been there. Believe you did the best you could for him, and any dream is his way of thanking you. Time to move on, my friend.
